Plot 730 Percival (Percy) Thomas Hart (1874-1937)
Percy was born 3 August 1874 in Richmond, Surrey to Jane (née Stephens) and Edmond Mills Hart. He was baptised Percival Thomas in the local parish church of St Mary Magdalene on 17 September. The record shows that his father was a joiner and they lived in Albert Road. He was their fourth child – all of them boys.
His father died in 1879 when Percy, as he seems to have always been known, was only two. His mother remained in Richmond and the 1881 census shows her and her four sons living at 1, Milton Terrace. The oldest, at 15, was a “blacksmith’s boy”, the others were still at school. Jane’s employment was “pew-opener”. According to the very full explanation in the blog All Things Georgian (https://georgianera.wordpress.com/2023/10/09/the-role-of-a-pew-opener/) this was a role filled by older, or poorer women in the parish in the days of box pews, and of pew rents, when people bought rights to occupy specific pews in a church. It was a way for the parish to provide a small income to impoverished women without them becoming a charge on the rates.
By 1891 Jane had taken on the licence of The Falcon pub in Stortford Road, Standon, Herts. This is now a private house, dating back to at least the 17th century. She was living there with Percy, aged 15, and her third son, now a blacksmith.
Percy became a house decorator and, in mid-1897, married Sarah Ann Potter in Berkhamsted. Their first son, Percy Edward Cyril, was born 20 November that year and was registered in Luton, possibly because of the closeness of his birth to the marriage, as there seem to be no other connections to Luton.
On 1 May 1899 the second child, Dorothy Mary E, was born in Standon, presumably at his mother’s home.
In 1901 they were living at 17, Charles Street and by 1911, at 30, Kitsbury Road.
In 1921 Percy was working as a painter for Gilberts Bros., Swing Gate Lane, Berkhamsted and living at 31, Kitsbury Road.
Percy died 4 January 1937 aged 62. Sarah survived him until 1953 and is buried here with him.
Percy jnr. continued as a projectionist, married and moved away, dying in Lambeth in 1969. Dorothy never married. She rose in her profession as a nurse and died in the Dacorum area in 1979.
