Grandson of Elizabeth and John Hatton, son of John Joseph and Elizabeth Jane Hatton
John Hatton was a boatbuilder who owned the boatyard in Castle Wharf, on the Grand Junction Canal. Around 1881 he sold the boatyard to William Costin, who ran the business there until it was taken over by William Key & Son timber merchants. It later became Alsford’s timber yard.
