John Hoar 1852-1908
John Hoar was born in Hemel Hempstead on 18th February 1852. In 1871, he was an engine driver living in Ellesmere Road with his mother and stepfather. Also he was recorded as a visitor to the Nash Household in Ravens Lane, which included daughter Ellen. The following year John and Ellen married. They had three children, Herbert William whose birth was announced in The Herts Advertiser “August 7 at Ellesmere Road, Berkhampstead, the wife of Mr John Hoar, of a son”, Henry, who was born on 20th January 1876 and Helen born in the second quarter of 1878. His wife Ellen died aged 24 in the third quarter of 1879.
In the 1881 census, John was working as a general labourer and living with his three children in Provident Place. On the 29th October at Hemel Hempstead Parish Church, John Hoar aged 29 married Eliza Gower aged 33.
John is mentioned in the Bucks Herald on a couple of occasions: On 7th November 1885, “Mr John Hoar, a working man, was nominated and elected to the Committee for the Cottage Garden Allotments” and 31st January 1891 “On Tuesday at Progress Hall, a capital entertainment was given in conjunction with the Co-operative Society, Mr John Hoar, presided”.
By 1891 he had been promoted to foreman at the chemical works and was living in Cowper Road with Eliza and his three children. By 1901 he was still living in Cowper Road with Eliza. He is shown in the Register of Electors as being able to vote in both Parliamentary and Parochial Elections.
John died on the 9 May 1908. According to the Probate Calendar, he was still resident in 3 Cowper Road and his estate was valued at £1683.3s.3d, probate being granted to widow Eliza and son Harry.
