Plot 935 Arthur Mardle (1870-1938)
Arthur was born in 1870 in Berkhamsted to Daniel and Jane (née Turner) Mardle. His father was a butler born in Welwyn, his mother had been born in Berkshire. He was baptised 2 October 1870. The family lived in Grubs Lane (now Chesham Road). He had three older sisters and an older brother.
By 1881 his father was butler to widowed Mrs Mary Smith-Dorrien who lived in Haresfoot House and the family had moved to a cottage in the park.
Arthur also went into service and in 1891, aged 21, he was a footman in the household of Henry, 5th Baron Foley, a Liberal peer. “In 1872, Foley purchased a considerable amount of land at Claygate, Surrey. At the core of this was Ruxley Lodge, “…a delightful family mansion moderate in size, but replete with comfort and convenience…” Lord Foley added the west wing, with its octagonal tower, turrets and gargoyles making it almost twice as large. The castellated building was renamed Ruxley Towers.” Lord Foley was unmarried and lived with his widowed mother and unmarried aunt, employing a butler, two footmen, a porter, a cook, a lady’s maid, three housemaids, a kitchen maid, a scullery maid, a coachman, three stable hands, a lodge keeper and a gardener. Arthur would not have felt lonely!
Arthur later became a gamekeeper on Tresco in the Isles of Scilly. The island belongs to the Duchy of Cornwall, but since 1834 has been leased to the Smith Dorrien family for whom his father had worked.
Arthur married Ada Ing in Berkhamsted 27 November 1910 and had another career change, becoming a domestic gardener. He and Ada moved to 7, New Street, Berkhamsted. They were to have two children: Roger Alfred (1912) and Florence Edith (1914).
The 1921 census records yet another career change for Alfred – he was a packer for Cooper & Nephews and the family lived at 5, Manor Street.
They had moved again by 16 March 1938 when Arthur died, aged 67, at 38, High Street.
Ada survived him until 1963 and is buried here with him.
His father and his brother Thomas are also buried in this cemetery.
