Willam Thomas Hurst
Plot 780 William Thomas Hurst
William was born in Berkhamsted in 1851 to Thomas and Eliza (née Holloway) Hurst. Thomas was one of the town’s clan of boot and shoemakers, ultimately originating in Aylesbury.
William was their first son and second child and in 1851 the family lived in the High Street, moving to Holliday Street by 1861.
1869 was a bleak year for the family – not only did William’s sister Emily die aged twenty but his father lost both his parents.
By 1871 William had followed his father into the shoemaking trade and was still living at home in Holiday Street. He was still there in 1881 but the census has “No occupation” crossed out against his name.
William did not marry until he was forty. His bride was Maria Sarah Richardson and they married in St Mary’s, Walthamstow 26 March 1891. They were not to have any children.
The 1901 census records William’s occupation as “painter” and he was with his widowed father at 17, Holiday Street.
In 1911 the couple were living in London at 7, High Street, Highgate and he was a house painter.
They moved back to Berkhamsted to 77, Shrublands Avenue.
Maria died in 1918 in Berkhamsted and is buried here.
William survived her until 6 June 1926 when he died at 77, Shrublands Avenue aged 75.
His aunt Eliza Hurst and her husband James William Wood, are buried in plot 656.
