Mary Ann Alexander (née Poulton) married missionary Samuel Alexander in 1829 (she signed her name with an “X”). They were living in 1861 in Cranford Street, Marylebone, with 4 sons and a daughter. In 1871 they were living in Chelsea. In 1881 they moved to Berkhamsted and were living in Manor Street.

From 1870, Samuel was the lay minister of Berkhamsted’s Plymouth Brethren evangelical church, who met from 1875 onwards in Hope Hall on Kings Road, (today the Kings Road Evangelical Church).

Samuel Alexander died 3rd January 1883 aged 73. The gravestone, now removed, recorded the fact that it had ‘been erected by the Company of Believers among whom he toiled at Hope Hall.’ Mary Ann, his wife, died 10th March 1888 aged 77. The funerals of husband and wife are both reported in the newspapers.

FUNERAL OF A MINISTER – The funeral of Mr. Samuel Alexander minister at Hope Hall (Brethren) took place on Saturday. Great respect was shown to the deceased, nearly 100 friends from London and elsewhere, together with members of the congregation, following him to his grave in the cemetery. Mr J.E Hawkins and Mr King took part in a service at the Hall and the grave side, when the company sang a hymn.

The funeral of Mrs Alexander took place at the Cemetery on Thursday, a large number of the Hope Hall brethren attending. Mr J.E Hawkins conducted the proceedings and an address was given by Mr. R. Farie. “Forever with the Lord” was sung at the graveside.

Samuel Alexander was the lay minister of Berkhamsted’s Plymouth Brethren evangelical church in Berkhamsted from 1870. The Brethren met in private houses and in the Town Hall before opening their own meeting hall on Kings Road, Hope Hall (today the Kings Road Evangelical Church).

Samuel was born in Horsley, Gloucestershire. He married Mary Ann Poulton in 1829 (she signed her name with an “X”). He was living in 1861 in Cranford Street, Marylebone, with his wife with 4 sons and a daughter. In 1871 they were living in Chelsea. He was described as a Missionary (City Missionary in 1851). In 1881 they had moved to Berkhamsted and were living in Manor Street.
