Richard Robinson Norris was a Quaker who owned the Lower Mill on London Road/Bank Mill Lane (now The Old Mill).
He married Elizabeth Anne Dixon and they had 6 children:
Jesse Bertha Norris (1858 – 1951)
Henrietta Norah Norris (1863 – 1925)
Richard Arthur Norris (1860 – 1937)
George Murray Norris (1861 – ?)
Lilla Mary Norris (1857 – 1921)
Ethelwynne Maud Norris (d.1958)
Norris was one of the founder members of the Berkhamsted Mechanics’ Institute, an organisation set up to promote literacy and learning among the working classes. His son Richard Arthur followed in his footsteps, becoming a long-standing member of the Institute, and was elected president twice. Richard Arthur’s name is known today among local historians as the author of an acclaimed history of the parish church, The Parish Church of Berkhamsted, St. Peter, Hertfordshire (1923).
